If someone were to ask you who God is? How would you answer them?
I think many would agree this could be a hard question to answer; unless, you actually know Him. Jesus asked this very question of His disciples "Who do the crowds say I am?" (Luke9:18). They gave Him a list of names like, John the Baptist, Elijah and others. Then He asked them, "Who do you say I am?" They answered, "You are the Christ, son of God." You see, the disciples knew Him because they spent time with Him. Similarly, if you spend time with God, you will know who He is.
When you know who He is then you're prepared to answer in a way that shows Him honor. If you're a Christian and you make time for God He will make Himself known to you through the Holy Spirit who is our Counselor (John14:26). Moreover, it is in His presence we are changed; not all at once, but over a period of time. The Bible says it this way; from glory to glory, in other words, step by step.
Indeed, this life changing process is difficult to explain for God is an experience not an explanation. Unless God has revealed Himself to a person they cannot comprehend what you are trying to say, the Apostle Paul said it this way in 1 Corinthians 2:14," The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them for they are spiritually discerned."
When I first read this scripture it helped me to understand why I was having such a hard time explaining God to people. You can't explain Him, you experience Him! So when people ask me who God is I can only tell them who He is to me. I could say, He's wonderful, beautiful, glorious, majestic and the reason for my existence, or I could go into some long theological discussion. Either way, they won't get it for they need to experience Him for themselves (Galatians 1:12).
Finally, if you want to know who God is you will need to pursue Him (1Chronicles 28:9). He will not force Himself upon you. He's a God of freedom who gives us a choice, He's not a dictator. He patiently waits for us to come to Him and when we do, He is right there. Furthermore, once you get to know Him and someone asks you who God is, you might be able to tell them in a way that gives Him honor; however, don't be disappointed if they don't get it.
