Desire To Prophesy

By Chris Ayakhilome

Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy (Corinthians 14:1)

The Bible says "There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but they all come from the same spirit" (I Corinthians 12:4 CEV). Meaning that, there are several gifts that God imparts to His children through the agency of the Holy Spirit. But from our opening scripture, we can decipher that the gift of prophecy ranks above all the other gifts of the spirit that you should desire. God wants you to operate the gift of prophecy.

The gift of prophecy isn't just for apostles, prophets, evangelists or pastors; it's for the church! Every Christian ought to prophesy. To prophesy is to speak forth the word of God in power, whether by foretelling of future events, or as a rhema-word to cause a change in the now! The Bible says "But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church" (I Corinthians 14:3-4). When you declare the mind of God in prophecy, others are edified, strengthened and comforted.

So you see, prophecy doesn't make one a "spiritual detective" to fish out brethren who are supposedly not living right, it's for the edification of the Body of Christ. This is why you must desire to prophesy, for the words you speak forth in prophecy are words impregnated by divined energy.

Thus, with the gift of prophecy in operation in your life, you can never be in darkness as to what steps to take in life. Moses, in the Old Testament, understood the power and importance of prophecy and wished that all of God's children were prophets (Numbers 11:29). But thanks be unto God, now that we are born again and have received the Holy Spirit, we've received the divine enablement and inspiration to prophesy.

Consequently, whether you're praying on your own, or in the company of other believers, you can prophesy. As the word of God wells up in you under that influence of the Holy Spirit, open your mouth and speak forth those words in prophecy.

If you've never prophesied, begin to desire the gift of prophecy. The Bible says the manifestation of the spirit is given to every man (not some, but all) to profit withal (I Corinthians 12:7). This means you too can prophesy, and you can begin right now!
